Overview
The SFP-1G-ZX Compatible transceiver is a high-performance optical module designed for long-haul Gigabit Ethernet applications. Compliant with the 1000BASE-ZX standard, it employs a precision 1550nm DFB laser transmitter to send data over Single Mode Fiber (SMF) to distances of up to 80 kilometers (approximately 50 miles).
This module is ideal for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), telecommunications carriers, and enterprise campus networks requiring stable, long-distance connectivity. It features a standard Duplex LC interface and includes Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) for real-time link health analysis.
Key Features
- Long Range: Supports data links up to 80km on 9/125µm Single Mode Fiber.
- Data Rate: 1.25 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet / 1G Fibre Channel).
- Wavelength: 1550nm Distributed Feedback (DFB) Laser.
- High Optical Budget: High transmitter power and receiver sensitivity designed for high-attenuation links.
- Connector: Industry-standard Duplex LC.
- DDM/DOM Support: Monitor optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.
- Hot-Swappable: Install without network downtime.
Applications
The 1000BASE-ZX SFP is engineered for scenarios where standard LX (10km) or EX (40km) modules fall short:
- Metro Area Networks (MAN): Connecting city-wide distribution points.
- Campus Interconnects: Linking buildings or facilities spread across large geographical areas.
- ISP Backhaul: Transporting data from remote access nodes to the central office.
- Industrial Telemetry: Long-distance monitoring and control systems (SCADA) over fiber.

| Dell | SFP-1G-ZX |
| Ubiquiti | UF-SM-1G-S (Similar generic ZX spec) |
| TP-Link | TL-SM311LS |
| Netgear | AGM732F |
Important: Optical Attenuation
Caution: The SFP-1G-ZX is a high-power transceiver. If you are testing this module or connecting it over a short fiber link (e.g., less than 10km), you must use optical attenuators (typically 5dB or 10dB) on the receiver side.
Connecting a ZX module back-to-back or over a very short cable without attenuation can saturate the receiver and permanently damage the optical sensor due to high laser power.
FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. What is the difference between 1000BASE-EX and 1000BASE-ZX?
The primary difference is distance and wavelength. EX usually operates at 1310nm or 1550nm for distances up to 40km. ZX operates exclusively at 1550nm for distances up to 80km.
2. Can I use this module for shorter distances, like 1km?
It is not recommended. Because the laser is very powerful, using it at short distances requires significant attenuation to prevent “blinding” or burning out the receiver. For 1km distances, use an SFP-1G-LX (10km) module instead.
3. What type of fiber cable is required?
You must use Single Mode Fiber (SMF), typically 9/125µm (Yellow jacket cable). This module will not function correctly over Multimode fiber due to dispersion issues over long distances.
4. Does this module support 100Mbps or 10Gbps?
No. This is strictly a 1.25 Gbps (Gigabit) module. It will not auto-negotiate down to 100Mbps, nor will it support 10Gbps speeds.
