Overview
The SFP-1G-EX Compatible transceiver is a high-performance optical module designed for extended-reach Gigabit Ethernet networks. Compliant with the 1000BASE-EX standard, this module utilizes a high-quality 1310nm DFB laser to transmit data up to 40 kilometers over Single Mode Fiber (SMF).
This transceiver is the perfect solution for medium-to-long range connections where standard 10km optics fall short, but expensive 80km optics are unnecessary. It features a built-in Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) interface, allowing network administrators to monitor critical parameters such as optical power and temperature in real-time.
Key Features
- Extended Distance: Supports link lengths up to 40km on 9/125µm Single Mode Fiber.
- Data Rate: 1.25 Gbps (Gigabit Ethernet).
- Wavelength: 1310nm DFB (Distributed Feedback) Laser.
- Connector: Standard Duplex LC interface.
- DDM/DOM Support: Real-time monitoring of Tx power, Rx power, voltage, and temperature.
- Reliability: Industrial-grade components for stable operation.
- Hot-Pluggable: Easy installation without powering down the switch.
Applications
The 1000BASE-EX SFP is widely used in metropolitan and campus networks:
- City-Wide Linking: Connecting branch offices or distribution nodes up to 40km apart.
- Campus Backbones: Linking widely separated buildings in large university or corporate campuses.
- ISP Aggregation: Connecting residential access switches to central distribution points.
- Security Surveillance: Backhauling data from remote IP camera clusters.

Our 1.25G EX (40km) transceivers are MSA-compliant and coded for seamless integration with leading network equipment manufacturers. They are compatible with the following part numbers:
| Manufacturer | Compatible Part Number |
|---|---|
| Cisco | GLC-EX-SMD |
| Juniper | EX-SFP-1GE-LH / EX-SFP-1GE-LX-40K |
| HPE / Aruba | JD061A (H3C/HP compatible variant) |
| Dell | SFP-1G-EX |
| Netgear | AGM732F (Note: AGM732F covers wider range, verify specific distance needs) |
| Generic MSA | SFP-1G-EX |
Fiber Cable Requirements
To achieve the full 40km distance, this module requires Single Mode Fiber (SMF) cables with an LC Connector. It is not compatible with Multimode fiber (Orange/Aqua cables). While it operates at 1310nm like the 10km LX module, the laser in the EX module is more powerful and the receiver is more sensitive to accommodate the longer distance.
FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. What is the difference between 1000BASE-LX and 1000BASE-EX?
LX is the standard for long-reach, typically covering up to 10km using a standard FP or DFB laser. EX is an extended version covering up to 40km using a higher-power DFB laser and a more sensitive receiver.
2. Do I need an attenuator for this 40km module?
Typically, no, unless the link is extremely short (e.g., testing back-to-back on a desk). The Tx power is not as dangerously high as the 80km (ZX) version. However, if connecting over distances less than 2km, checking the optical power levels via DDM is recommended to ensure the receiver is not saturated.
3. Can I use this module with 1550nm fiber equipment?
No. This transceiver operates at 1310nm. It must be paired with another 1310nm transceiver on the other end. If you use a 1550nm module on the other side, the link will not come up.
4. Is this compatible with Gigabit Ethernet switches?
Yes, this is a standard SFP module designed for any switch port that supports 1G SFP optics. It is not compatible with 10G SFP+ ports unless the switch allows forcing the speed down to 1G.
