Overview
The SFP-10G-LR-20km Compatible transceiver is a high-performance optical module designed to bridge the gap between standard “LR” (10km) and “ER” (40km) optics. Engineered for extended reach applications, it transmits data up to 20 kilometers (approx. 12.4 miles) over Single Mode Fiber (SMF), effectively doubling the range of a standard 10GBASE-LR module.
Operating at a wavelength of 1310nm using a high-quality DFB (Distributed Feedback) laser, this module offers a cost-effective solution for mid-range links. Because it stays within the 1310nm window, it avoids the higher cost associated with the 1550nm EML lasers used in 40km/80km modules. It features a standard Duplex LC connector and full Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM).
Key Features
- Extended Reach: Supports link lengths up to 20km on 9/125µm Single Mode Fiber.
- Data Rate: 10 Gbps (10.3125 Gbps).
- Wavelength: 1310nm (DFB Laser).
- Connector: Duplex LC.
- Cost-Efficiency: Provides longer reach than standard LR without the high price tag of ER (40km) optics.
- DDM/DOM Support: Real-time monitoring of optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.
- Low Power Consumption: Typically < 1W, energy-efficient design.
Applications
The 10G 1310nm 20km SFP+ is ideal for network scenarios where the standard 10km limit is just slightly exceeded:
- Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN): Connecting enterprise branches or distribution nodes across a city.
- Large Campus Backbones: Links between buildings in extensive university or industrial campuses.
- ISP Distribution: Connecting aggregation switches to access nodes.
- Fiber Backhaul: Cost-effective mobile backhaul links.

FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. Can I connect this 20km module to a standard 10km SFP-10G-LR?
Yes. Since both modules operate at 1310nm, they are optically compatible. However, the maximum link distance will be limited by the weaker module (the 10km standard LR) if placed on one end. For a full 20km link, you need 20km modules on both sides.
2. Do I need an attenuator for this module?
No. Unlike 40km (ER) or 80km (ZR) modules that use high-power lasers, this 20km module uses a DFB laser similar to standard LR optics. It generally does not require attenuation, even for short cable runs.
3. Why is this better than using a 40km (ER) module for a 15km link?
Cost and Compatibility. A 40km ER module uses a 1550nm wavelength, which is more expensive to manufacture. This 20km module uses 1310nm, which is significantly cheaper. Additionally, 1310nm has zero chromatic dispersion issues at this distance.
4. What type of fiber cable is required?
This module requires Single Mode Fiber (SMF), typically OS1 or OS2 (9/125 microns), with standard LC connectors.
