Overview
The SFP-10G-ER Compatible transceiver is a high-performance optical module designed for “Extended Range” 10 Gigabit Ethernet applications. Compliant with the 10GBASE-ER IEEE 802.3ae standard, it provides robust connectivity for distances up to 40 kilometers (approx. 25 miles) over Single Mode Fiber (SMF).
Unlike shorter-range modules that use 1310nm, this unit utilizes a 1550nm EML (Electro-absorption Modulated Laser). This wavelength experiences lower attenuation in fiber optic cables, allowing the signal to travel significantly further without regeneration. It features a standard Duplex LC interface and fully supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM).
Key Features
- Extended Reach: Supports link lengths up to 40km on 9/125µm Single Mode Fiber.
- Data Rate: 10 Gbps (10.3125 Gbps).
- Wavelength: 1550nm (Cooled EML Laser).
- Connector: Duplex LC.
- Sensitivity: High receiver sensitivity via PIN or APD technology.
- DDM/DOM Support: Integrated digital diagnostics for real-time link health monitoring (Voltage, Temp, Tx Power, Rx Power).
- Compliance: Fully MSA, RoHS, and SFF-8431 compliant.
Applications
The 10GBASE-ER 40km SFP+ is the ideal middle-ground solution for networks that span cities or large campuses:
- Metro Area Networks (MAN): Connecting distribution nodes across a city.
- Campus Interconnects: Linking buildings on large university or corporate campuses that exceed 10km.
- Storage Area Networks (SAN): Extended distance Fibre Channel or iSCSI connections.
- ISP Backhaul: Reliable aggregation links for Internet Service Providers.

FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. Do I need an attenuator for the 10G ER module?
Sometimes. While less critical than with 80km (ZR) modules, the 10G ER can have a high transmit power. If you are connecting two ER modules over a very short distance (e.g., less than 5-10km), a 5dB attenuator is recommended to prevent receiver saturation or damage.
2. Can I connect a 10G ER (1550nm) to a 10G LR (1310nm)?
No. Transceivers must operate on the same wavelength to communicate. The ER module uses 1550nm, while the LR module uses 1310nm. They are incompatible with each other.
3. Why use 1550nm for 40km?
Standard 1310nm lasers suffer from higher attenuation (signal loss) per kilometer. By switching to 1550nm, the signal loss is reduced, allowing the data to travel the full 40km without needing amplification.
4. Is this module hot-swappable?
Yes, this SFP+ module is hot-swappable. You can insert or remove it from a powered switch without shutting down the device, provided the switch supports hot-swapping.
