Overview
The SFP-10G-SR Compatible transceiver is the industry standard for short-distance 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. Compliant with the 10GBASE-SR specification, this module utilizes a high-performance 850nm VCSEL laser to transmit data over Multimode Fiber (MMF).
Designed for the high-density demands of modern data centers and enterprise wiring closets, the SFP-10G-SR offers a cost-effective solution for connecting servers, storage arrays, and switches. It supports link lengths of up to 300 meters on OM3 fiber and up to 400 meters on premium OM4 fiber, making it the go-to choice for rack-to-rack and intra-building connections.
Key Features
- Short Reach: Optimized for Multimode fiber, delivering 10G speeds up to 300m (OM3) or 400m (OM4).
- Wavelength: 850nm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL).
- Connector: Dual LC interface (Duplex).
- Data Rate: Supports 10.3125 Gbps (10G Ethernet).
- Energy Efficient: Low power consumption (typically < 0.6W) helps reduce data center cooling costs.
- Hot-Swappable: Can be installed or removed without powering down the network equipment.
- Diagnostics: Full Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) support.
Applications
The SFP-10G-SR is the workhorse of local area networking:
- Data Center Uplinks: Connecting Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches to Aggregation or Core switches.
- Server Connectivity: Linking servers with 10G Network Interface Cards (NICs) to the network.
- Storage Area Networks (SAN): Connecting iSCSI or FCoE storage appliances.
- Enterprise LAN: High-speed distribution links within a single building or floor.

OM3 vs. OM4 Fiber
The performance of the SFP-10G-SR depends on the quality of the fiber cable used:
- OM1 (Orange): Legacy fiber. Not recommended for 10G (limit approx 33m).
- OM3 (Aqua): The standard for 10G. Supports up to 300 meters.
- OM4 (Aqua/Violet): Premium Multimode. Supports up to 400 meters.
FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. Can I use Single Mode Fiber (Yellow cable) with this module?
No. The SFP-10G-SR uses an 850nm laser designed specifically for the larger core of Multimode fiber (50 or 62.5 microns). Connecting it to Single Mode fiber (9 microns) will result in immediate signal loss and link failure.
2. Is this module compatible with 1G SFP ports?
Generally, no. An SFP+ module typically runs at a fixed 10Gbps speed. However, some specific switch models allow for dual-rate operation, but you should usually assume an SFP+ module requires an SFP+ slot.
3. What is the difference between SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR?
SR (Short Reach) uses Multimode fiber for short distances (up to 300/400m) and is cheaper. LR (Long Reach) uses Single Mode fiber for long distances (up to 10km). They are not interchangeable.
4. Do I need to clean the connectors?
Yes. Even though these are consumer-friendly modules, dust is the #1 enemy of fiber optics. Always keep the dust cap on when not in use, and if possible, use a fiber cleaning pen (One-Click cleaner) on the LC connector before plugging it in.
