Overview
Maximize your fiber optic infrastructure with the SFP-10G-BXU Compatible transceiver. As the “Upstream” component of the standard Bidirectional (BiDi) pair, this module enables 10Gbps data transmission over a single strand of Single-Mode Fiber (SMF), effectively doubling the capacity of your existing cabling.
The SFP-10G-BXU operates efficiently up to a distance of 10 kilometers. It utilizes a 1270nm DFB laser for transmission and a 1330nm receiver. To create a successful link, this unit must be paired with a corresponding “Downstream” module (SFP-10G-BXD) at the opposite end.
Key Features
- Single Fiber Capacity: Consolidates transmit and receive functions onto one fiber strand using WDM technology.
- Wavelength Configuration: Transmits at 1270nm / Receives at 1330nm.
- 10km Range: Ideal for metro access rings, campus interconnects, and point-to-point links.
- Connector: Simplex LC interface.
- Hot-Swappable: Can be installed or removed without powering down the switch.
- DOM Support: Digital Optical Monitoring allows reading of voltage, temperature, bias current, and optical power.
Applications
The SFP-10G-BXU is a versatile solution for modern network architectures:
- Metro Area Networks (MAN): Linking aggregation switches to core routers.
- Security Surveillance: High-bandwidth backhaul for IP camera aggregation points.
- Fibre Channel: Compatible with 8G/10G Fibre Channel applications for storage networking.
- Cost-Effective Expansion: Adding capacity to leased fiber lines without incurring the cost of a second strand.

Advantages
The SFP-10G-BXU is a strategic asset for network engineers facing fiber scarcity. In scenarios where digging new trenches for fiber is impossible or prohibitively expensive, BiDi optics allow you to light up a new connection using just half the fiber usually required. This module is also fully compliant with the SFF-8431, SFF-8432, and SFF-8472 standards.
FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. Why must I pair this with a BXD module?
Optical communication requires a distinct path for sending and receiving. Since BiDi modules use one fiber, they use two different “colors” of light to avoid collision. The BXU sends “Color A” (1270nm) and listens for “Color B” (1330nm). The BXD does the reverse. If you use two BXUs, they both send “Color A” and neither will hear the other.
2. Does the temperature affect this module?
This specific module is rated for Commercial Temperature ranges (0°C to 70°C), which is standard for data center and office environments. If you need to deploy this in an unconditioned outdoor cabinet, you should look for our Industrial Temperature (-40°C to +85°C) version.
3. How do I clean the optical connector?
Dust is the enemy of fiber optics. We recommend using a standard “One-Click” cleaner designed for LC connectors (1.25mm ferrule) before inserting the fiber patch cable. This ensures the best signal quality and prevents damage to the laser.
4. Can I use this for shorter distances, like 1km?
Yes. The 10km rating is a maximum. Because the transmit power is regulated, you can use this module for shorter distances (like 500m or 1km) without needing optical attenuators, as the receiver is robust enough to handle the signal without saturation.
5. Is this module compatible with 1G SFP ports?
Generally, no. SFP+ modules are designed for 10G speeds. While they fit physically into 1G SFP slots, most switches will not power them on or recognize them. You must use a 10G-capable SFP+ port.
