Overview
Boost your network throughput beyond Gigabit limitations with the 2.5G Bi-Directional (BiDi) SFP Fiber Transceiver (SFP-2.5G-BX40). Engineered for high-speed, long-distance applications, this module delivers 2.5 Gbps bandwidth up to a distance of 40 kilometers over a single strand of Single Mode Fiber (SMF).
This transceiver is the perfect solution for bridging the gap between standard 1G and expensive 10G networks. By utilizing Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) with 1310nm and 1550nm wavelengths, it doubles your fiber plant’s efficiency, making it highly suitable for connecting Wi-Fi 6 access points, cellular base stations, and enterprise backbones where fiber conservation is critical.
Key Features
- Enhanced Speed: 2.5 Gbps data rate (2.125Gbps / 2.5Gbps), compliant with SFF-8472.
- Long Range: Transmission distance up to 40km on 9/125µm SMF.
- WDM Technology: Single fiber operation (Tx 1310nm/Rx 1550nm or Tx 1550nm/Rx 1310nm).
- Interface: Simplex LC Connector for high-density patching.
- Intelligent Diagnostics: Built-in DDM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) for tracking voltage, temperature, and optical power.
- Durability: Metal enclosure for low EMI and high reliability.
Applications
The SFP-2.5G-BX40 serves specific high-bandwidth niches:
- Wi-Fi 6/6E Backhaul: Connecting 2.5G-capable Wireless Access Points to distribution switches over long distances.
- 5G/LTE Front-haul: Supporting CPRI/OBSAI rates for mobile tower connectivity.
- FTTx Aggregation: Uplinking OLTs or aggregation switches where 1G is insufficient.
- Industrial Automation: High-speed links for factory floors requiring noise immunity and range.

Advantages
The 2.5G 40km BiDi SFP offers a strategic “middle-ground” upgrade. It provides 2.5x the bandwidth of standard Gigabit SFPs without the cost or power consumption of 10G SFP+ modules. The 40km reach capability ensures that even remote network nodes can benefit from multi-gigabit speeds without requiring signal boosters or mid-span repeaters.
FAQ (Technical & Product Questions)
1. Will this module work in a standard 1G SFP port?
Generally, no. The host port must explicitly support the 2.5 Gbps rate. While some 10G SFP+ ports are multi-rate and can down-clock to 2.5G, most standard 1G SFP ports cannot run at 2.5G. Check your switch datasheet for “2.5G” or “Multi-Gig” support.
2. Do I need to install these in matched pairs?
Yes. BiDi technology requires complementary wavelengths. If you install a Tx 1310nm/Rx 1550nm module at the local end, you must install a Tx 1550nm/Rx 1310nm module at the remote end.
3. Can I use this for 40km connections if I have high signal loss?
This module has a power budget designed for 40km (approx 17-19dB budget). If your fiber link has excessive splices or old cabling with high loss, you should verify the optical budget using the DDM function. For distances significantly beyond 40km or very lossy links, an 80km module might be safer.
4. Does this support SONET/SDH?
Yes, it supports rates compatible with OC-48 / STM-16 (2.488 Gbps), making it suitable for legacy telecom transport networks as well as Ethernet.
5. Is this module hot-swappable?
Yes, standard MSA compliance ensures you can insert or remove this transceiver without powering down your switch or router.
